Tool Review: OTC 4-in-1 Angled Wire Tool and 4-in-1 Wire Tool

Aug. 3, 2015
The small size and versatility of these tools allowed the reviewer to work effectively in close quarters.

The OTC CrimPro 4-in-1 Angled Wire Tool, No. 5950A, combines four separate tools into one convenient configuration for common wire repairs technicians experience every day. Simplify wire repair in hard-to-reach places with the ability to pull or twist wires, cut, strip or crimp from any angle. When wire service is compromised by limited access, CrimPro’s angled feature, unique to OTC, allows access to close quarters and facilitates superior crimps. The universal crimping design accommodates 12-20 AWG for both insulated and non-insulated connectors, with custom gripping teeth that pull or twist wires. Cushioned grips improve dexterity, and the compact 7" size is easy to store. Service applications include wiring harnesses, trailer lights and fixing broken wires anywhere. The 5950A CrimPro’s design keeps the connector, the wire, and the crimper "in-line" - improving visibility and access in hard-to-reach places.

The OTC CrimPro 4-in-1 Wire Tool, No. 5950S, features a compact, 7" design that can be used in four ways. The tool's gripping nose is designed to pull, twist, bend and shape. The crimping design accommodates 12-20 AWG for both insulated and non-insulated wire. The tool's stripper accommodates 12-20 AWG wire, while the cutter serves to make cuts above and below pivot. This tool is available in a set, No. 5950K, along with the 5950A 4-in-1 Angled Wire Tool.

The Review

For jobs that necessitated the addition of the wires and terminals under a vehicle dashboard, Barry Hoyland, owner of Vehicle Service Solutions of California in Camarillo, Calif., says he appreciated both the size and capabilities of the 4-in-1 Angled Wire Tool, No. 5950A, and the OTC 4-in-1 Wire Tool, No. 5950S.

Both tools, which are also available in a set, No. 5950K, allowed Hoyland to cut, strip, crimp and bend wires and terminals during various vehicle repairs, some of which he says would have been difficult to complete with larger tools. The 5950A, is an angled wire tool, while the 5950S is more or less a straight version of the 5950A. Both offer technicians four separate tools (crimper, stripper, cutter and gripping nose) into one convenient configuration for common wire repairs technicians experience on a regular basis.

“The small size fits well in your hand and allows for work in close quarters,” says Hoyland of the 5950A and the 5950S, both of which feature a compact, 7” design.

According to Hoyland, the tools do not require any manual or directions. He says there is enough information on their respective packages to inform a user of their capabilities.

He was also quite impressed with a number of features of both tools.

“I like the angled head and the (small) size of the (5950A),” says Hoyland, who also is quick to note that he appreciates the small size of the 5950S as well. “The gripping nose (on both tools) is useful, as it allows the technician to bend and form wire and terminals if necessary, without changing tools.”

Not only did Hoyland say he could not think of any potential improvements or additional features for either the 4-in-1 Angled Wire Tool, No. 5950A, or the OTC 4-in-1 Wire Tool, No. 5950S, he praised both tools and gave them each a rating of 9 out of 10.

(They are) extremely useful due to both the capabilities and the size of each of the tools,” he adds.
