Ask the Expert: How often do my vehicle lifts have to be inspected?

Aug. 13, 2014
When inspections are performed by qualified personnel, they help protect users by ensuring that the lifts they work under are functioning properly and maintained in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and general guidelines.

Q: How often do my vehicle lifts have to be inspected?

A: Annual vehicle lift inspections are required by ANSI/ALI ALOIM:2008 (R2013), the national standard covering lift operation, inspection and maintenance, as well as many local and state regulations. When inspections are performed by qualified personnel, they help protect users by ensuring that the lifts they work under are functioning properly and maintained in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and general guidelines.

To find a qualified lift inspector in your region, visit the Automotive Lift Institute’s (ALI) online database of ALI Certified Lift Inspectors at www.autolift.org/inspectors.php. ALI Certified Lift Inspectors are qualified to inspect any vehicle lift, regardless of its manufacturer. Once an annual inspection is complete, the ALI Certified Lift Inspector will provide the facility manager or owner with a written report containing any non-compliant findings or other reportable observations for the lifts, bays or shop.  The inspector will also apply a serialized inspection label to every lift that passes.
