Here are some of the basics of an oil analysis program for your fleet.

Q: How does oil analysis work?

A: Here are some of the basics of an oil analysis program for your fleet:

  1. Work with a reputable lab such as Polaris or Blackstone.
  2. Create a sampling plan for your fleet - don’t assume that all vehicles will perform the same way.
  3. Test different options including oil and filters combinations.
  4. Set target oil change intervals and pull samples at the specific intervals such as 5,000 and 10,000 miles.
  5. Don’t forget to test the vehicles at zero miles because this sets a baseline for the vehicles.
  6. Train your techs on how to pull the oil samples – sloppy work can lead to misreads, lost time and money.
  7. Work with your lab to understand your results and how they compare to their baselines.
