NSF International launches Automotive Recycler Certification Program

Aug. 9, 2016
The new certification program will provide independent, third-party certification to verify that automotive recyclers are able to meet grading, labeling and traceability requirements as well as federal, state and local recycler requirements.

NSF International, a global organization with more than 70 years of independent product testing and certification expertise, including automotive supply chain products, will introduce an NSF Full-Service Automotive Recycler Certification Program during NACE 2016, held August 9-13 in Anaheim, Calif.

The new certification program will provide independent, third-party certification to verify that automotive recyclers are able to meet grading, labeling and traceability requirements as well as federal, state and local recycler requirements.

Automobiles are among the most recycled commodities in the marketplace and the professional automotive recycling industry recycles over four million motor vehicles annually in the U.S. and Canada alone.

“There are thousands of automotive recyclers in the U.S. today. With NSF recycler certification, qualifying recyclers now have a way to differentiate themselves in terms of providing high-quality recycled parts with regular audits of their processes,” said Roger Schroder of Car-Part.com, an industry expert who sponsored and helped develop the protocol on which the certification program is based.

Car-Part.com co-sponsored the NSF Full-Service Automotive Recycler Certification Program to help automotive recyclers further demonstrate their capabilities and excellence in serving the collision repair industry.

"NSF International has established a strong quality brand in the collision repair industry and Car-Part is happy to work with NSF to further strengthen the NSF brand and the recognition of quality recycled parts distributors," said Jeff Schroder, CEO of Car-Part.com.

The Car-Part Pro marketplace for the collision and professional mechanic industries supports NSF certification, allowing insurers and repairers to easily select NSF certified distributors.

“Parts from NSF International certified recyclers can be purchased with full confidence that the parts are graded and labeled properly,” said Bob Frayer, Global Managing Director of NSF International Automotive Certification Programs.

Automotive recyclers and industry experts worked with NSF International to develop the requirements for the NSF Full-Service Automotive Recycler Certification Program in accordance with American National Standards Institute (ANSI) procedures. The program will help insurers, regulators and consumers identify certified recyclers who meet all requirements including those pertaining to business, licensing, reporting, environment and safety. The program also includes operations requirements for vehicle acquisition, dismantling, equipment, parts storage, customer service and sales.

Recyclers that meet all certification requirements can use the NSF Certified Automotive Recycler mark on their website and promotional materials. NSF certified recyclers also will be included in NSF’s online certification listings and undergo ongoing facility audits to maintain certification.

Additional information about NSF's Full-Service Automotive Recycler Certification Program can be found on NSF’s website or by contacting Bob Frayer at [email protected].

Recycler certification complements NSF’s other automotive supply chain certification services to ensure the highest quality parts and services:

  • Automotive Parts Certification, which certifies that automotive aftermarket parts meet rigid quality, safety and performance standards for form, fit and function.
  • Automotive Collision Parts Distributor Certification, which certifies distributors who sell aftermarket parts.
  • Collision Repair Shop Certification, which certifies the capability of a repair shop’s facility, procedures, training and internal processes to execute higher quality, consistent and safer repairs.
