Tool Review: GTE Tools SmartSnap Pliers
The GTE Tools SmartSnap Pliers, “convertible” snap-ring pliers, allow users to change quickly and easily between internal- and external-style snap rings with a single lever. These snap-ring pliers feature quick-release tips for simple changes between large and small retaining rings. The tips, made of hardened steel, are designed with tapered, anti-slip ends for durability and a dependable grip. The premium molded, ABS tray included with the tool offers convenient storage, quick access and an organized toolbox. The SmartSnap Pliers come with a lifetime warranty.
The review
In need of a pair of snap-ring pliers that can stand up to extensive use, Daniel McGuinn – an independent reviewer with RealToolReviews.com – says the GTE Tools SmartSnap Pliers were up for the task.
“We used these extensively onsite with a local motorcycle repair shop where snap-ring pliers are in high demand – with high failure rates,” McGuinn says. “The fast-action, solid open/close and very strong pins prevented slippage and made installing and removing snap rings much faster.”
McGuinn utilized the tool while rebuilding a motorcycle transmission – specifically replacing gears on the motorcycle transmission input shaft; removing and reinstalling motorcycle fork seals; and removing ball joints.
“Even with dirt, rust and corrosion in the holes of the snap ring, these still gripped enough to remove (the ball joints), making something that would normally require hammers, chisels and a lot of cursing, literally, a 15-second part of the repair. Huge time-saver.”
McGuinn liked the solid feel of the tool and the easy-to-change pins, which are tapered to prevent slippage. Packaged in a blow molded tray that can be removed and placed in a toolbox to help keep organized, the SmartSnap Pliers and four sets of pins are included. His only reservation about the pins would be finding a replacement if one breaks. This concern could be quelled if an extra packet of pins was included with the tool.
The pliers are simple to use with just two pins that need to be installed before beginning a task.
“Literally some of the easiest snap-ring pliers to operate, since there are no screws to remove and handles to realign,” McGuinn notes. “The pins also require no tools to change them out – just flip a tab, and they are ready to swap.”
McGuinn had previously used other “convertible style” snap-ring pliers and has always been unimpressed with them.
“Even after extended use – over a month of daily use in a commercial setting, they have not broken any tips and have not had any issues,” he says of the SmartSnap Pliers. “The guys in the shop love that they no longer have to use the standard auto-part store set anymore, and they finally have a pair of snap-ring pliers that work.”
