Ask the Expert: Can I use a manual adjust clutch with a hydraulic linkage?

Nov. 17, 2016

Q: Can I use a manual adjust clutch with a hydraulic linkage?

A: You can, but it is not recommended. If you do, understand that proper clutch adjustment monitoring is critical. There will be little to no feedback to the driver or technician through in cab pedal “free play.” Without proper inspection, the first sign of trouble will be the clutch slipping, which causes damage to the clutch. Manual adjust clutches cost less initially and are familiar to technicians who are comfortable with the installation. Unfortunately, that reduced initial cost is lost if the clutch only gets 50 percent of its life expectancy due to premature failure from slippage. Like it or not, fleets and technicians are going to have to consider the self-adjusting clutch as a lower maintenance alternative with hydraulic linkages.
