Q: In simple terms, what is the ELD mandate?
A: ELD stands for electronic logging device. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has made it mandatory to track Hours of Service (HOS) electronically. For those who may not know, HOS regulations are issued by the FMCSA and govern the working hours of anyone operating a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) in the U.S.
In simple terms, it is a way for drivers to log their HOS in an efficient and safe way rather than manually logging hours in a paper log book. Additionally, it decreases data tampering and improves data accuracy. In order to accomplish this, vehicles will need to be equipped with a telematics device that allows the driver to update his or her HOS electronically through mobile applications.
