Q: What type of vehicles will be affected by the ELD mandate? Are there any exemptions?
A: Vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of 10,001 lbs or more will be affected. Larger vehicles such as walk-in vans, box trucks, and heavy duty pickups all the way up to Class 8 vehicles will require installation of telematics devices that track driver HOS. These installations will typically be handled through the upfitting process for new vehicles, or through third-party installations.
There are three exemptions:
Drivers who use paper Records of Duty Status or Driver Logs for no more than eight days during any thirty day period.
Drivers who conduct drive-away or tow-away operations, where the vehicle being driven is the commodity being delivered (e.g. transporting an empty vehicle for sale, lease or repair).
Drivers of vehicles manufactured before model year 2000.
