The Review
When it comes to automotive repair, having hands-free illumination options is not only a convenience, but a necessity. Because the Matco Tools COB Folding Light, No. MFLCOB25G, has several different features for hand-free use, like a magnet, belt clip and hook, Lou Fort, lead technician at K.A.R.S. Inc in Huntingburg, Ind., says it allowed him to use it while performing all sorts of repairs around the shop.
"I was quite impressed with the holding power of the magnet," Fort says. "But not every place has metal for the magnet to hold on to, so having a built-in hook to hang the light from is a bonus."
Fort used the hook option of the MFLCOB25G when performing work inside, or through, the wheel wells by hanging it on the lip of fenders.
"This is the only light I can hang on those thin fender lips and use the swivel feature to put the light where I want it," Fort says.
He has also used the hook or magnet on the light when doing under vehicle work, like transmission, wiring and suspension repairs.
Fort says using the light for under dash work is more challenging, and that there would be a better light option for that kind of work.
But overall, Fort says he was impressed with the handheld light.
"I love the size of this little powerhouse of a light," Fort says. "I have used all kinds of cordless LED lights over the years. This one seems to be one of the best in terms of balance. The magnet is strong but not overpowering, the light output is average to above average, and run and recharge times are average."
When Fort received the MFLCO25G, it came in a small box which included a charger cord, replacement hook for hanging the lamp and a basic manual. The light arrives uncharged, and needed to be plugged in and brought up to a full charge before use.
"Good things do still come in small packages, and this is one of them," Fort says. "Of all the cordless lights I own this is the only one I am going to own a pair of."
