As a result of the strong demand for I-Shift - Volvo Trucks’ innovative mechanical transmission with automated gear-changing function, the manufacturer has announced it will start assembly of I-Shift gearboxes in its production plant in Hagerstown, Maryland, starting in the third quarter of 2012.
Volvo Trucks launched its I-Shift transmission in Europe in 2001 and introduced it to the North American market in 2007.
Last year, 26 percent of trucks sold in North America were equipped with I-Shift and customers continue to report significant fuel economy improvements with the auto-shift transmission.
Since I-Shift is only available together with Volvo engines, this also helps promote sales of the company's own powertrain system. I-Shift incorporates a host of fuel-saving and productivity-enhancing features into a reliable, durable, and lightweight design.
The transmission is currently assembled in Koping, Sweden, and then sent to the U.S. production plant in Hagerstown, Maryland, for adaptation to North American market requirements.
The company is investing $7 million in Hagerstown to build a new assembly line, install new equipment and tooling, and train its employees. The new assembly line is primarily intended to supply the North American market.
This year, I-Shift is celebrating its 10th anniversary.
Today no fewer than 80 percent of Volvo’s FH trucks are equipped with the system.
The I-Shift now has applications for most types of transport and engines with high torque.
The basic transmission has been further refined and a new front splitter gear has been added, together with a new clutch system. The rear range transmission has also been redesigned and shortened.
As a result, the entire transmission is lighter and more compact. I-Shift therefore now functions together with all axle configurations with the exception of all-wheel drive.
