Shell Rotella Ultra ELC - heavy duty extended life coolant - has been formulated to provide effective heat transfer, protection against freezing and boiling, and corrosion protection for cooling systems on today’s hotter-running engines.
Additional demands are placed on the coolant because of increased amounts of heat need to be removed from newer the engines.
A key element of the new coolant is that it is nitrite free, said Stede Granger, an OEM technical service manager with Shell. As such, Rotella Ultra ELC provides “excellent protection” against liner pitting and corrosion damage, and has a service life of 600,000 miles or 12,000 hours without the need for supplemental coolant additives typically used in conventional coolants or coolant extenders that are used in extended life coolants.
He explained that unlike traditional coolants, extended life coolants use additives to provide corrosion protection through electro-chemical interaction, rather than creating a protective film that results in a barrier to heat transfer. As such, ELC additives last long and “extend” the life of the coolant.
In addition, the nitrite-free coolant offers “outstanding” high temperature aluminum and cooper/brass protection, noted Granger, and helps extend the life of water pumps, radiators and other cooling system components.
Shell Rotella Ultra ELC’s anti-scaling properties also work to prevent hard water mineral build-up, he said.
The nitrite-free coolant comes as a factory fill for Navistar’s 2010 compliant MaxxForce 11 and 13 liter engines.
