The companies will remain independent, but pool resources on research and development.

Hino Motors, a subsidiary of Toyota Motor, and Volkswagen Truck & Bus will partner together on research and development of diesel- and gasoline-electric hybrid engines, connectivity and autonomous technology.

The plan is to remain independent but combine resources in order to "save on" budgets, Volkswagen Truck & Bus GmbH CEO Andreas Renschler told reporters, according to Reuters.

The partnership was announced at a joint news conference in Tokoyo, Japan on April 12.
