Aftermarket suppliers report better sales but falling optimism in third quarter

Oct. 24, 2013
Quarterly barometer finds sales growth in both independent aftermarket and among original equipment suppliers.

The Automotive Aftermarket Supplier Association quarterly supplier barometer reported an increase in sales performance in the third quarter. Average growth in both the independent aftermarket and OES sectors increased as well. While the overall outlook of survey respondents remained positive, the number who indicated they were optimistic about the industry outlook declined from 2013 second quarter responses, and new orders weakened.

"This leaves us in an unusual situation: better performance but declining optimism," the report noted. "While current performance indicators all headed up in the quarter, market performance appeared to weaken as the quarter went on. Unfortunately, the end to Q3 was welcomed by the government crisis at the start of Q4, indicating a possible slow start to Q4."
