SuperTech Maryland set for June 6

The Maryland Motor Truck Association will hold Supertech Maryland, its third annual technician skills competition, on Saturday, June 6, at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium.

The Maryland Motor Truck Association will hold Supertech Maryland, its third annual technician skills competition, on Saturday, June 6, at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, where it will test the abilities of truck technicians with a written test and a variety of skill stations.

“Supertech Maryland is a hands-on contest where technicians gather to test their abilities against their peers,” says Louis Campion, president of the Maryland Motor Truck Association. “It showcases the knowledge, training and skill needed by today’s maintenance professionals.”

Winners receive more than $5,000 in cash and prizes, including tablets and trophies. The Maryland state champion will receive a trip to American Trucking Associations’ Technology & Maintenance Council’s National Skills Competition — TMC SuperTech 2015 — to be held Sept. 21-23 in Orlando, Fla. All contestants will receive lunch, an event t-shirt and a gift bag.

Supertech Maryland begins with a 6:30 A.M. check-in, followed by a written test starting at 7 A.M., and a hands-on skills competition from 8:30 A.M. – 1:30 P.M. Winners will be announced during an award ceremony immediately following the skills competition.

The written test will be based on TMC Recommended Practices and/or manufacturers’ best practices. Contestants will have 23 minutes to complete each of the hands-on skill stations.

Skill stations include:

  • Engine electrical – Troubleshoot, service and repair engine electronics and related systems;
  • Preventive maintenance – Demonstrate ability to perform preventive maintenance procedures;
  • Fasteners – Demonstrate ability to service and repair fasteners;
  • Fifth wheel – Conduct a hands-on diagnostic & preventive maintenance inspection on a 5th wheel;
  • Service information – Retrieve service information from currently accepted industry sources;
  • Brakes – Perform tasks in accordance with USDOT, CVSA and SAF-Holland procedures;
  • Wheel end – Troubleshoot, service and repair wheel ends; and
  • Electrical – Test circuits and components with volt, amp and ohmmeter
