Crossovers are top-selling vehicle in the U.S., states report

Crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) accounted for 45 percent of passenger vehicles sold in 2021, according to a SEMA Market Research report.

According to SEMA Market Research, crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) are the fasting-selling type of vehicle in the United States, accounting for 45 percent of passenger vehicles sold in 2021.

CUVs are also the most common type of vehicle on the road, accounting for almost one in four vehicles on the road, the report "CUV Market Snapshot” states.

Other notable stats from the SEMA report, include:

  • $7.7 billion was spent on specialty-equipment parts for crossovers in 2020, which was more than SUVs. 
  • 40 new electric CUV models are to be released in the next three years. 
  • 59 percent of new CUVs sold by 2035 are expected to be electric, hybrid, plug-in, or fuel cell. 
  • More than 170 models are projected to be sold from 2022-2028. Currently, there are 130 models on the market.
