Top 10 states with highest proportion of EVs: 2023 Edition
Zutobi, an online driver education platform, has released their 2023 EV Charging Station Report. In their report they delve into the question: How does the growth in EV adoption compare to the development of charging infrastructure?
Since their last report in 2022, the number of EVs in the U.S. has increased by 42 percent, from 1,019,260 to 1,454,580. However, the growth in public charging outlets hasn't quite matched that, growing from 128,549 to 143,771 over the same period, an increase of around 12 percent.
States with the most charging stations per EVs
North Dakota and Wyoming remain in the top two states with the most charging stations per EVs, with West Virginia taking the place of Mississippi from last year's report.
North Dakota is reported to have a total of 172 electric charging ports and 380 registered EVs. This means that there are 45.3 charging stations per 100 EVs. Overall, the state has the lowest number of electric vehicles, but the high ratio of chargers suggests that the local government is putting in the work to encourage residents to make the switch to electric.
In second place, Wyoming boasts 41.8 charging stations per 100 EVs, with 510 registered EVs and 213 electric charging ports. Wyoming is one of a number of states in the U.S. that received government funding to create a network of chargers connecting to highways right from the Atlantic Coast to the Pacific.
Finally, in third place, West Virginia has about 38.2 charging points for 100 EVs. While the number of registered EVs in the state is relatively low, with charging infrastructure starting to develop, more people are encouraged to make the change.
States with the fewest charging stations per EVs
There are still states facing challenges in keeping up with the rapidly growing demand for electric vehicles, particularly in terms of charging infrastructure. Oregon, New Jersey, and Arizona rank in the bottom three.
Oregon comes in last (technically first on this list) with only about four charging stations per 100 EVs. New Jersey is in second with 5.6 charging stations per 100 EVs. Zutobi notes that New Jersey still ranks among the top three states with the biggest increase in charging points, with a growth rate of 33.37 percent compared to 2022. Finally, in third is Arizona with 6.5 stations per 100 EVs.
States with the highest proportion of EVs
Many states are experiencing a significant uptake in electric vehicles when compared to the overall number of vehicles on the road. The report lists the top three states with the highest proportion of electric vehicles on the road.
In third place is Colorado with 37,000 registered EVs out of 1,479,097 registered private automobiles, making EVs 2.5 percent of automobiles. Ahead of Colorado is Hawaii with 14,220 registered EVs out of 456,261 automobiles. Finally, California boasts EVs as being 4.01 percent of registered automobiles with 563,070 registered EVs out of 14,027,931 vehicles.
