Ford Motor Company has recalled around 4,595 2024 Ford Mustangs due to a batch of faulty rear suspension knuckles. The likelihood of failure is much higher for these defective components, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
According to the recall notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), all of the impacted cars were built at the Flat Rock Assembly plant between July 25 and September 15, 2023.
The issue arose during the casting process where debris might have entered the castings, ultimately weakening the knuckles and increasing the likelihood of a fracture. According to Ford, a fractured knuckle can reduce the amount of lateral stiffness provided by the suspension, resulting in massive caster changes under braking or accelerating. Drivers who experience this issue may lose control of the vehicle.
Ford states that they are not aware of any crashes or injuries as a result of the bad batch of suspension parts. The manufacturer became aware of the issue in June after servicing two Mustangs with broken rear knuckles.
Ford dealers are expected to resolve the issue, with free repairs given to owners of the recalled vehicle. Ford’s recall filings for its dealers make note of optional pick-up and drop-off services, to make sure customers don’t have to get behind the wheel of the damaged machines. Letters were sent to owners on August 26.
