BMW issued a recall for nearly 721,000 vehicles because of insufficient water pump sealing. According to the notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 1 percent of the 720,796 vehicles under the recall are affected by the pump defect.
The recall states that blow-by-liquid from the positive crankcase ventilation system may collect on the intake air hose, which could then drip onto the plug connector and possibly leak into the plug itself. That, in turn, creates the possibility of a short circuit that could increase the risk of a thermal event or fire.
The recall affects nearly 63,000 2012-2015 X1 sDrive 28i and X1 xDrive28i vehicles, 110,102 2012-2016 528i and 528i xDrive vehicles, 163,728 2013-2017 X3 sDrive28i and X3 xDrive28i vehicles, and 236,702 2012-2016 3 Series Sedans. Dealers were notified on August 13, 2024, and BMW owners are expected to be notified on October 4, 2024. BMW dealers will inspect and replace the pump and plug connector if necessary, as well as install a shield to divert any possible fluid.
