2014 Chevy Cruz and 2013 VW Passat diesels to be showcased to politicians

Aug. 15, 2013
The 2013 Volkswagen Passat TDI set a U.S. record by averaging 77.99 MPG.

The latest advancements in clean diesel technology - including two of the world's most fuel-efficient vehicles – will be highlighted at the 2013 National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Legislative Summit in Atlanta this week by the Diesel Technology Forum.

The 39th annual NCSL summit will be attended by more than 5,000 legislators from all political parties, legislative staff, government officials, business representatives, foundation and think-tank representatives and others interested in public policy. The summit will be held from August 12-15 at the Georgia World Congress Center. Energy, transportation and environmental issues are some of the primary issues included in this year's summit agenda.

Attendees will learn the importance of clean diesel technology to individual communities, states and the entire nation at the Diesel Technology Forum (DTF) exhibit (#419) which will include state-specific fact sheets, multi-media presentations, charts of the Top 10 states for diesel passenger vehicle and heavy duty truck registrations, and discussions with representatives from DTF and the diesel industry.

Two highlights of the DTF exhibit include the newly introduced 2014 Chevy Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel car and the record-setting 2013 Volkswagen Passat TDI clean diesel.

In June, the 2013 Volkswagen Passat TDI set a new Guinness World Records achievement for the lowest fuel consumption in the 48 contiguous U.S. states for a non-hybrid car category by averaging a remarkable 77.99 miles per gallon during a 14-day trip that covered 8,122 miles. The Volkswagen Passat TDI mileage mark also shattered the hybrid vehicle U.S. record of 64.6 miles per gallon by more than 13 mpg.

In addition, DTF will showcase the new 2104 Chevy Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel that averages 46 mpg on the highway, which is the best fuel economy of any gasoline or diesel car in America. The 2014 Cruze has received overwhelming positive reviews and is equipped with modern clean diesel technology that helps reduce emissions without sacrificing power.

"These clean diesel vehicles are excellent representatives of the latest diesel technology being offered in the U.S.," said Allen Schaeffer, the executive director of the Diesel Technology Forum. "High mileage, fuel efficiency and low emissions are the trademark of new clean diesel vehicles are we are certain these will impress the legislators, staff members and other government officials attending the summit.

"Diesel technology has made tremendous advancements in recent years as manufacturers have invested billions of dollars in new research and development. The NCSL summit provides us an excellent opportunity to showcase the latest in clean diesel technology to policy makers from all 50 states."

"The Forum will highlight the importance of diesel technology in meeting each state's and the federal government's climate and clean air goals," Schaeffer said. "These efficiency and environmental goals will be made possible by the inherent and proven energy efficiency of diesel, the transformation to clean diesel fuel and engine technology, and the significant penetration of diesel in key sectors of each state's and our national economy.

"It's also important that legislators be informed that major U.S. and international energy studies are projecting that diesel will continue to be the dominant fuel source for transportation for the next several decades."
