Geotab adds driver privacy mode to data management solution

May 24, 2018
“Data privacy continues to make its way higher up on the priority list for fleet managers,” CEO Neil Cawse said.

Geotab launched a Privacy Mode feature. Intended for drivers who require intervals of privacy, Privacy Mode enables both drivers and dispatchers to temporarily shield vehicle tracking within their MyGeotab fleet management application.

Privacy Mode is specifically designed for drivers who may use work vehicles on their personal time or in the event that it is an organizational requirement that exact locations of drivers be unidentifiable in a particular zone. When Privacy Mode is enabled for a vehicle, features that use GPS such as position, trips and speed profiles are not displayed.

Privacy Mode provides drivers and dispatchers with the ability to distinguish between trips and as a result, manage privacy accordingly. As part of a fleet’s overall data privacy strategy, Privacy Mode, with its granular access controls, helps promote good data management practices.

Available capabilities of Geotab’s Privacy Mode feature include:

  • Privacy Mode can be set to automatically turn on during specific times of the day or in specific geographic regions. In this way, drivers can be confident their driving activity during personal time is not displayed and dispatchers are assured work hours are set to be tracked.
  • Privacy Mode can also be manually assigned in the Geotab Drive App or in MyGeotab in real-time, depending on individual requirements.
  • Vehicle generated data collected by a vehicle in Privacy Mode is securely stored as ‘private’, such that businesses will not have access to data processed during the time the vehicle is in Privacy Mode. This data can be set to permanently purge after a time interval.

“Data privacy continues to make its way higher up on the priority list for fleet managers,” said Neil Cawse, CEO at Geotab. “Geotab’s new Privacy Mode feature provides fleet managers with another level of customization for their telematics solution without limiting the richness and utility of the data available to them.
