Maine Bills Threaten to Dismantle Safety Inspection Program

The Automotive Service Association (ASA) reports Maine House Bill (HB) 439 and HB 567 propose to weaken or eliminate Maine’s safety inspection program.

If enacted, HB 439, introduced by State Rep. Paul Stearns, R-119, would require a biennial safety inspection as opposed to the current annual requirement. The bill is co-sponsored by State Rep. Richard Cebra, R-68, who sponsored the unsuccessful HB 167, a virtually identical bill that failed in committee at the end of January. Cebra is also the sponsor of HB 567, which would dismantle the entire vehicle safety inspection program in Maine.

The ASA is a staunch supporter of vehicle safety inspections and opposes these bills. Both HB 439 and HB 567 are scheduled for committee hearings this week. ASA encourages all interested parties in Maine to visit www.TakingTheHill.com  (click “Alerts”) to contact their state representatives in opposition to these bills.

The ASA is the largest not-for-profit trade association dedicated to and governed by independent automotive service and repair professionals. ASA serves an international membership base that includes numerous affiliate, state and chapter groups from both the mechanical and collision repair segments of the automotive service industry.

ASA advances professionalism and excellence in the automotive repair industry through education, representation and member services. Visit www.ASAshop.org  or call (817) 514-2900 for more information.
