In order to reset the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) on the 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan, the reset selection must be made through the MFD (multi-function display) in the cluster. The “SET” button as used on other models with the indirect TPMS system has not been included for the Tiguan. The procedure is listed in the owner’s manual.
Resetting the tire pressures in the MFD resets the benchmark tire pressure used by the TPMS to the current tire pressure based on the tire circumference.
To reset the reference tire pressure, switch the ignition to the ON position. In the MFD, navigate to the Settings menu and select Tire Pressure. Store and confirm the new tire pressures.
The recalibration must be performed each time the tire pressure in one or more of the tires has been adjusted or after one or more tires have been changed, exchanged or repaired. The new tire pressures are stored in the system only after at least 20 minutes of normal driving.
If you have reset the benchmark tire pressure when the tires do not have the correct pressure, this will prevent the TPMS from working properly. It may then give false warnings or may not give any warnings even if the tire pressure is too low. For this reason, it is vital to make certain that all four tires are inflated to the correct pressure when cold, before calibrating the system.
