From strategic partnerships to autonomous developments, the automotive industry is taking center stage…the CES 2023 stage that is. Here’s an exclusive look at the latest announcements and what will be on display this week at CES 2023 in Las Vegas.
ZF’s next-generation Level 4 shuttle
ZF unveiled its latest autonomous shuttle. With SAE Level 4 autonomous driving capability, the next-generation shuttle can maneuver in urban environments and mixed traffic without a safety steward. The emissions-free shuttle operates along defined routes at a maximum speed of initially 25 mph and can hold 22 passengers (with up to 15 seated). ZF also announced their partnership with Beep to bring several thousand autonomous shuttles to the U.S.
Holon’s Mover
Holon, the new Benteler brand, presented the world’s first autonomous mover built to automotive standards - in terms of safety, ride comfort, and production quality. The SAE Level 4 mover features a maximum speed of 37 mph, offers a range of 180 miles, is handicap and stroller accessible, and can hold up to 15 passengers (10 seated, 5 standing). The mover is geared towards private sectors, such as airports, campuses, and parks. In partnership with Beep, production of the mover is scheduled to start in the U.S. at the end of 2025.
Bosch’s sensor-based innovations
Bosch, a long-time leading sensor manufacturer in automotive, announced two new sensor-based innovations for mobility: RideCare companion and off-zone crash detection. The RideCare companion is designed to play a critical role in the enhancement of safety for all vehicle occupants in connected and automated mobility. The companion is comprised of a camera, a wireless SOS button, and cloud-based data services, drivers can connect with Bosch in the event of an accident. Bosch can assess the situation via the camera and quickly seek assistance. The off-zone crash detection system uses smart sensors and software algorithm to protect passengers in the event of side collisions. The system can quickly detect the exact angle of impact and trigger the correct airbag.
Continental’s ultrawide display and new strategic partnership
Continental released its curved, pillar-to-pillar display concept with an invisible control panel that only appears when required (to avoid driver distraction). The display offers a high-contrast picture quality, emitting more than 3,000 LEDs, and is planned for 2026. The company also announced its partnership with Ambarella Inc, an AI semiconductor company, to help develop scalable software and hardware systems for assisted and automated driving. With Ambarella’s System-on-Chips (SoC), the two companies will focus on full-stack systems for Level 2+ to highly automated vehicles.
Sony Honda Mobility’s AFEELA
Sony Honda Mobility announced its new brand, “AFEELA,” and unveiled its first prototype, the Vision-S 02. With a minimalist-like feel interior and a “media bar” to display prominent vehicle information, the new vehicle was designed to “demonstrate a new relationship between people and mobility” while delivering maximum user experience and comfort. Online pre-orders are expected to begin in 2025.
Ottonomy.IO’s Ottobot Yeti
Although not technically for the automotive sector, this fully autonomous indoor/outdoor delivery robot is worth mentioning. It is the world's first autonomous unattended delivery robot designed for first mile, curbside, and last mile delivery. After global pilots in 2022, the company revamped its original design and now features greater accessibility (interchangeable cabins) and moveability (ability to move sideways in crowded and unpredictable situations).
This year, the automotive sector is expected to be larger than ever, covering more floor space and featuring the latest technological advancements. Make sure to stay tuned for more event coverage.
