SEMA sponsors California ZEV conversion bill

Feb. 3, 2023
Senate Bill 301 is a financial rebate program that will assist vehicle owners who wish to convert their gas and diesel-powered vehicles to zero-emissions vehicles.

The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) is sponsoring the California Senate Bill 301. Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D-Burbank) introduced the bill as a financial rebate program that will assist vehicle owners who wish to convert their gas and diesel-powered vehicles to zero-emissions vehicles (ZEVs). Overall, the legislation will allow California to:

1. Support small businesses

As the ZEV market continues to grow, it puts money back in the hands of independent auto repair shops and ZEV conversion businesses, which in turn creates and sustains automotive jobs.

"SB 301 creates opportunities for our California-based small businesses, their employees, and consumers to build and have access to affordable zero-emissions vehicles," said SEMA President and CEO Mike Spagnola.

2. Maintain its car culture

California has a rich history with cars, and SB 301 enables those with classic cars to convert their vehicles to ZEVs, so that history is maintained while also contributing to a lower-emission future.

3. Aid its citizens in creating a smaller eco-footprint

“It is essential that we continue to look for new methods and ideas to meet our strong climate goals,” said Senator Portantino. “SB 301 will make it much easier for many Californians who have the desire to go green but lack the financial capacity to do so. Cutting-edge energy efficiency should not be reserved only for those wealthy enough to afford it.”

Eligible Californians will be offered up to a $2,000 rebate through SB 301 to make the conversion to a ZEV.
