Western Star recalls 7,000 trucks for fire risk

Western Star 4700, 4900, 5700, 6900 models are potentially involved.

Daimler Trucks North America has issued a 7,128 truck recall for certain Western Star trucks produced between 2016 and 2018.

The pass through power stud and attached foam gasket seal mounted through the bulkhead on the trucks has the potential to contact and form an electrical arc. The arching of the power cable between the stud and bulkhead could increase the risk of fire, the defect information report reads.

Vehicles affected

Certain Western Star Model Year 2017 to 2019 trucks, produced between Oct. 18, 2016 and Feb. 6, 2018, are potentially involved. Daimler notes in its recall documents that the estimated percentage of those actually involved will be around 1 percent.

  • 5700
  • 6900

Three of out four of the Western Star models in this recall were also involved in another Daimler-related recall earlier this year. That time, the concern was improperly tightened brake caliper mounting bolts which could lead to brake failure.

Remedy

The pass through power stud will be inspected for clearance of the bulkhead and replaced if required at a Daimler authorized service facility.

Official dealer and owner notification of the recall will be sent May 21, 2018.
