Doing the requisite amount of research will ensure you get the best piece of equipment for your needs.

Q: What should we consider before buying an A/C service machine for our shop?

A: Once your team has determined that adding A/C system service and repair to your shop will increase revenue, you will want to do some research to select the best piece of equipment for your needs:

  • SAE certified productivity ensures the machine will operate with specific equipment performance, purity and safety guidelines for the recovery and recycling of motor vehicle refrigerant. Refer to the SAE J2788 guideline for R-134a refrigerant and the SAE J2843 guideline for R-1234yf refrigerant before purchasing a manufacturer’s product.
  • Hybrid vehicle servicing needs will determine the model of equipment selected. SAE approved machines processing R-134a refrigerant offer options for onboard or manual oil injection systems.  Different PAG oils have the potential to absorb water and moisture and conduct electricity.  The technician must ensure the use of non-conductive oil, such as POE oil, when working on a hybrid vehicle with hermetically sealed compressors.  SAE approved A/C service models for hybrid vehicle service requires manual oil injection, putting the responsibility of the oil selection back to the technician to ensure safe operation of the equipment.  Understanding your shop’s market needs will help you choose the best suited machine.
  • 609 certification is required for all technicians that will repair or service vehicle air conditioning systems. This training will ensure safety for your staff, customers and the environment.  You can find out more on this certification through national and regional agencies in your area.
