Tech Tip: Confirm SAE equipment compliance with a click or two

Feb. 8, 2017
When looking to purchase AC service machines, leak detectors, analyzers or other tools, dyes or components, shop owners can now verify that the item they wish to purchase is recognized as compliant to the advertised SAE standard.

The arrival of R-1234yf in the automotive world generated several new SAE standards intended to support the use and servicing of this new fluid.  Among the new standards, SAE J2911 was developed to help ensure the authenticity of A/C service equipment, components and services displaying the SAE certification label. This SAE Standard provides manufacturers, testing facilities and providers of technician training with a procedure for certifying compliance with the applicable standard.

For shop owners and technicians, SAE J2911 brings a public website where they can see which products have been recognized as having met a stated standard. The website, macdb.sae.org, lists the SAE standards requiring SAE J2911 compliance and has a search function for ease of use.

When looking to purchase AC service machines, leak detectors, analyzers or other tools, dyes or components, shop owners can now verify that the item they wish to purchase is recognized as compliant to the advertised SAE standard. Purchasing verified equipment, fluids or parts ensures that you are getting authentic products recognized by SAE.

In addition to some updated R-134a standards, including J2788 and J279, new standards specific to R-1234yf include:

  • J2843: AC Service Machines for R-1234yf
  • J2845: Technician training program requirements
  • J2851: Recovery only machine for contaminated refrigerants
  • J2912: Portable Refrigerant Analyzers
  • J2913: Electronic Leak Detectors
  • J2927: Integrated refrigerant analyzers
  • J2970: Trace Gas electronic leak detectors
  • J3030: Convertible AC service machines for R-134a and R-1234yf
