Ask the Expert: How can remote diagnostics improve fuel efficiency and CSA compliance?

Find out which faults may be affecting fuel efficiency.

Q: How can remote diagnostics improve fuel efficiency and CSA compliance?

A: Fleets are quickly recognizing the benefits achieved by utilizing remote vehicle health and safety monitoring solutions. Regardless of the make/model buildup of their fleet, some offerings provide actionable information about the health and safety of their vehicles to make the time-critical business decisions needed to optimize fleet performance and decrease unexpected downtime.

For TripVision’s latest release for example, Noregon expanded upon its fault categorization, which stems from analyzing more than 44,000 faults and grouping them based on which component they affect and the severity of the fault. These fault categories help provide overall vehicle health and safety scores, but are also continuously improved to group similar faults, including faults that affect fuel economy or CSA compliance (Fig. A...Editor's Note: See 'View Gallery' near image above).

Fuel is the largest single operating expense that Fleets incur. Having a system that actively monitors faults affecting fuel efficiency allows fleets to take advantage of cost-saving opportunities, which improves performance and positively affects their bottom line. In addition to detecting fuel issues, some solutions monitor the vehicle systems directly related to safety; including brakes, tire pressure, and steering mechanisms. Issues with these systems can lead to CSA violations and affect the overall safety of the vehicle and driver.

By knowing which faults are affecting fuel efficiency or potentially causing CSA violations, the fleet dispatcher can relay that information to their service professionals and determine the best plan-of-action for addressing the issue(s). Real-time on-the-road fault monitoring helps fleets prioritize repairs and ultimately improve overall fleet performance.
