Tech Tip: Addressing acceleration issues on a 2016 Dodge Ram 3500

Nov. 28, 2017
The truck came to the shop because it was hesitating, stumbling and bogging on acceleration.

Vehicle: 2016 Dodge Ram 3500, 4WD, L6-6.7L DSL Turbo

Mileage: 18,650

Problem: The truck came to the shop because it was hesitating, stumbling and bogging on acceleration. The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) was on and the vehicle was in “reduced power” mode.

Details: The technician connected a scan tool and noted six diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs): P063D, P0933, P0863, P2121, P2267 and P2299. All the codes had two things in common – all were related to particulate and soot filter pressure sensors underneath the truck and they were all linked to a 5V reference being shorted. Coincidentally, the customer had been working under the truck, changing those filters prior to the problem starting. The technician inspected the harness going to those sensors.

Confirmed Repair: The technician found the wire harness draped over the exhaust pipe and the driveline. The yellow/pink 5V reference wire had been rubbed through and was shorting. The technician repaired the wire, routed the harness properly and cleared the DTCs. Problem fixed!
