Ask the Expert: Are shops ready for HFO-1234yf refrigerant?

2018 model year vehicles are proof that the OEs' transition to HFO-1234yf refrigerant is well under way. This year, shops will start seeing vehicles that were early adopters of the new refrigerant coming off warranty and needing A/C system services. Are technicians ready to service these vehicle A/C systems? Servicing an HFO-1234yf system will require updated technician training, along with new equipment, in order to service these systems properly and safely.

So, what is needed to be ready for servicing HFO-1234yf systems? As of January 1, 2018, a certification card is required in order for shops to purchase cylinders containing more than 2 lbs of HFO-1234yf refrigerant. Shops will need an A/C RRR unit SAE certified for use with HFO-1234yf refrigerant. Onboard oil injection is prohibited for servicing the new refrigerant, therefore technicians will require a manual oil injection method compliant with J2788 standards, as well as an electronic leak detector SAE certified for HFO-1234yf. Not required but highly recommended is a tool to quickly determine A/C system performance. Shops that put off technician training and purchasing the A/C equipment needed will be left out in the cold come the hot summer months.
