Tech Tip: Improve your preventive maintenance procedures

May 22, 2019
By performing an effective preventive maintenance check, you can reduce breakdowns, maximize the life of vehicle components, and much more.

Preventive maintenance (PM) is the practice of performing a comprehensive check of a vehicle’s total health to reduce the odds of a future malfunction. If you are a technician working for a fleet, your PM checks directly improve your company’s bottom line. If you work for a repair facility, you help build your shop’s reputation with customers by proactively discovering issues that could potentially sideline their vehicle during the next delivery.

By performing an effective preventive maintenance check, you can:

  • Reduce breakdowns
  • Maximize the life of vehicle components
  • Improve fuel efficiency
  • Detect safety related issues and reduce potential CSA fines
  • Prevent minor issues from escalating

Accurate

Not only do your inspections need to be accurate, but also the recording of vehicle information should correctly identify the vehicle undergoing maintenance. JPRO’s preventive maintenance checklist is available without connecting to a vehicle, but auto-population of fields, which provides the most accurate information, requires a connection. When you connect to the vehicle, JPRO captures important fields such as odometer, VIN, Unit #, and Vehicle Make/Model/Year from the data bus.

Comprehensive

JPRO includes multiple preloaded preventive maintenance checklists, including specialized inspections such as trailer or DOT. Each item includes a user-friendly description of what needs to be checked, plus fields for notes, whether service is necessary, and initials to log who performed the inspection. All fields are filled electronically while the technician makes his or her way around the vehicle, including information for brake and tread wear.

Once the inspection is complete, there is a section for the technician to input comments, such as whether the customer denied repairs. Every shop operates under different standards, so JPRO’s capabilities include custom PM inspection lists. Users have the option to create new checklists from scratch or modify existing lists. Rather than typing out each required inspection item, users simply choose from a list and quickly generate their new PM inspection list.

Repeatable

Because many organizations choose to mandate that all technicians follow the same checklist, PM inspection lists created in JPRO can easily be saved and then shared as an attachment via email, a shared directory, or other preferred method.

Repetition creates efficiency, meaning consistent use of the same checklist will empower technicians to perform preventive maintenance checks quicker as they grow accustomed to the list. By standardizing your checklist within your organization, you will improve the overall efficiency of the shop and, in turn, improve profitability and customer satisfaction.
