This tool was reviewed by Ken Elzinga, Owner of Hilltop Auto Service, Byron Center, Mich.

Q: How did the tool/equipment function as far as saving you time?

A: Pushing back brake caliper pistons is a daily part of disc brake service. This tool has a built-in ratchet wrench that allows the user to push back one or two pistons evenly and quickly. It is one of several piston push-back tools that we use and has become a favorite of our brake techs.

Q: How has using this tool impacted your shop’s profitability?

A: Anything that helps us do the job more quickly helps our profitability.  While this tool is not a huge time saver over other tools, it does do a good job for its purpose, and so it does help us get the job done quickly.

Q: What kind of setup was involved before using the product?

A: No setup is needed. It’s very easy to use right out of the box.

Q: What features did you like?

A: We like the ratchet wrench push-back functionality of the tool. It allows the tech to push back one or two pistons evenly and quickly. This is a great design feature.

Q: How could you improve or add to this tool?

A: This tool works great on conventional brake calipers. Some caliper pistons need to be rotated and pushed back at the same time. If the tool could be expanded to work on these as well, that would be a great addition to its capabilities.

Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for? Please provide a few specific examples.

A: We do brake service on all cars and light trucks. We used the tool on a wide variety of makes and models. It performed well on all vehicles.

Q: Have you used a previous version of this tool? If so, what are some new features compared to the old version? / How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it?

A: We have several brake caliper push-back tools. The features I like about this tool are the ratchet wrench mechanism for pushing back pistons, its compact size that makes it usable with one hand, and the ability to push back two pistons at the same time.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?

A:  I would give it a 10. There are many tools made for this purpose, but this has become our go-to tool when servicing brakes.
