Tool Review: GEARWRENCH 82-pc 120XP Automotive Tool Set in Foam Storage Tray, No. GWMSMBS02

Reviewed by Brian Culotta, shop foreman and master technician at Dave's Auto Care in Willoughby, Ohio.

Q: How did the tool function as far as saving you time?

A: The tool set is organized well in a drawer-sized foam insert for quick accessibility. When a tool is removed from the foam insert, the inside layer is in a high contrast orange-colored bottom making it obvious when a tool is removed.

Q: How has using this tool impacted your shop's profitability?

A: I have placed this tool set in our express oil change bay to allow our general service technicians access to an assortment of commonly used tools that this kit offers.

Q: What kind of setup was involved before using this product?

A: No setup is required. The tool set is ready to be placed in a tool cart or toolbox drawer.

Q: How easy was it to use?

A: The convenient layout of the assorted tools made this set very easy for any technician of any skill level to use.

Q: How was its packaging?

A: The product was packaged in a standard cardboard box.

Q: What features did you like?

A: The high visibility foam inserts labeling for quick reference to what tool is in its respective slot. The ratcheting wrenches and 3/8" ratchet are of high quality. Similar to those purchased from a tool truck.

Q: Is there any way you could think to improve or add to this tool?

A: This tool set is limited in available sizes but after reviewing GEARWRENCH's website, they do offer multiple sets to meet your exact needs. I learned that their line-up of modular tool sets is vast. You can build a complete tool set with everything they offer.

Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?

A: Due to the limited sizing of the tools in this kit (8mm/10mm/13mm being the common trio of sizes) I chose to use this as a community tool kit for all technicians in our shop to use in our express oil change bays. A more extensive/complete kit would be required for most services on vehicles.

Q: How does this tool compare to other tools you've used like it?

A: I have thousands of sockets from almost all manufacturers. GEARWRENCH tools have always been a favorite of mine because they are durable and affordable.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?

A: Eight. I wish the tool kit were more complete. The limited socket/wrench size selection will frequently have me returning to another tool kit. I understand that GEARWRENCH offers multiple kits to meet the users' needs though.
