The 2005 to 2006 Chevrolet Equinox, 2006 Pontiac Torrent and 2002 to 2003 Saturn Vue use an AF33-5 transmission. This is a 5-speed front wheel drive transmission that also is used in select Saab, Volvo and Nissan vehicles. Saab and Volvo call it an AW55-50SN transmission, while Nissan calls it an RE5F22A.
As a result, there are issues with this transmission that for obvious reasons will be common to all of these vehicles.
The Equinox, Torrent and Vue do have an issue specific to themselves. The driver of the vehicle may complain of a variety of issues such as reduced power, stuck in 5th failsafe, an illuminated SES Lamp, radio speaker buzz and/or an inoperative HVAC.
It comes in to your shop and you check it for codes and discover a host codes, which could include and number of the following: P0223, P0504, P0700, P1228, P1271, P1280, P1599, P1779, P1791, P2101, P2119, P2128, P2135 or P2138, (most of which are throttle or accelerator related signals).
The cause is due to a compromised 40 pin located behind the drivers kick panel, which has become corroded from water intrusion.
After locating and eliminating the water intrusion, wire packages are available to do individual wire repair. It is tedious work, but with the kick panel removed, pull the connector out into the foot-well and it’s like having room with a VUE.
