Bosch introduces Platinum Ir Fusion spark plugs

March 23, 2011
For those who seek superior spark plug performance, long plug life

For those who demand superior spark plug performance, durability, and longevity, Bosch offers the Platinum Ir Fusion, which utilizes an iridium and platinum center electrode with Bosch’s surface air gap technology and yttrium-enhanced ground electrodes to deliver better than OE performance.

Bosch’s Platinum Ir Fusion combines iridium and platinum in a patented fused fine wire center electrode design, sintered into an extended insulator nose. This design reaches self-cleaning temperature only seconds after starting and provides exceptional wear resistance, offering the best self-cleaning properties, better heat dissipation and lower, more stable ignition voltage requirements. The result of this industry-leading technology is a spark plug that fires more powerfully and more consistently than other designs, providing easier starting, improved fuel economy, reduced emissions levels, and longer life.

The technology behind the Bosch Platinum Ir Fusion is very sophisticated. This advanced plug features four yttrium-enhanced ground electrodes, providing exceptional performance life. Yttrium is a rare earth element which was discovered in Ytterby, Sweden in 1794 and is a key component in superconductors and television screens. The use of yttrium, when combined with nickel chromium, produces a more stable alloy with significantly improved resistance to spark wear from erosion and oxidation.

On-road testing conducted by Bosch indicates significant ground electrode durability improvement compared to ground electrode designs of nickel chromium alone. Bosch Platinum Ir Fusion features an exclusive surface air gap design that delivers a longer, more powerful spark, and the factory pre-set gap never requires adjustment. Bosch durability tests confirm that the reduced gap wear of the Bosch Platinum Ir Fusion lowers the voltage requirement on the ignition system, yielding better, more consistent performance and longer service life.

Spark Plug Portfolio Meets Market Demands

Bosch has re-structured its entire spark plug portfolio to further address consumer demands and market trends. The complete line-up consists of Bosch Super Plus, Bosch Platinum Plus, Bosch Platinum+2, Bosch Platinum+4 and the Bosch Platinum Ir Fusion.

Bosch Super Plus is an advanced copper core spark plug that uses yttrium to significantly increase the copper core center electrode’s resistance to spark erosion. This spark plug delivers a 50 percent longer service life than all other copper core plugs. Plus, its tapered v-profile ground electrode improves fuel ignitability and cold start performance.

The Bosch Platinum Series includes the new Bosch Platinum Plus. This spark plug features Bosch’s exclusive pure platinum technology in a fused fine wire center electrode design with a tapered v-profile yttrium-enhanced ground electrode to deliver a 25 percent longer service life over the original Bosch Platinum plug. The new Bosch Platinum Plus, together with Platinum+2 and Platinum+4, provides the industry and motorists with all levels of premium platinum performance.

A pioneer in engineering and development of automotive technology, Bosch entered the automotive aftermarket in the U.S. in 1906 with the world’s first commercially viable high voltage spark plug and magneto. Over the years, Bosch has been responsible for such landmark automotive-related inventions as heat ranges in spark plugs, copper core spark plugs, and long-lasting platinum spark plugs – all revolutionary steps in spark plug technology.

Bosch is a proud supporter of the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association’s Know Your Parts education and awareness campaign. This initiative promotes the importance of quality brand name aftermarket parts backed by full service suppliers, and its impact on delivering reliable products to today’s motorists.
