Regular motor oil – even diesel engine oil – no longer contains enough ZDDP (zinc dialkyldithiophosphate) to protect race engine valvetrains against friction and wear. Most racing vehicles have larger camshafts with increased valve spring pressures that enable higher rpms. If the camshaft and lifters aren’t properly protected against friction, they will get damaged, leading to lost horsepower and even breakage.
