Wrench Tales #6: Chris Martino

July 18, 2024
Leveraging the power of only a few tools and some creativity, Chris successfully diagnosed a "no-communication" issue on a diesel truck without rolling up his sleeves!

Wrench Tales is back again for episode #6! Chris Martino (of ADAS LI, in Long Island, NY), once again joins Motor Age magazine’s Technical Editor, Brandon Steckler for a clever “no-communication” diagnosis of a 2012 Dodge Ram.

Like many, Chris will be the first to admit that he “doesn’t do diesel.” Truthfully, that is a common phrase spoken among automotive technicians. Most in the United States don’t prefer to service diesels because they are ill-equipped. On the flip side, they are ill-equipped because they don’t service diesels. It’s a vicious cycle. But Chris’ brilliant approach to this no-start/no-communication complaint avoids the “hands-on” approach on this greasy, dirty diesel Dodge Ram and leads to a successful diagnosis, without even rolling up his sleeves!

Chris was hired as a mobile solutions provider to aid a hosting repair shop in the programming of this Dodge’s TIPM (or Totally Integrated Power Module). The shop previously diagnosed the no-start symptom as a faulty TIPM. To Chris’s surprise, his factory WiTech scan tool couldn’t communicate with the PCM or any node on the High-speed CAN_C bus upon arrival.

Leveraging the power of Alldata service information system, a Fluke DVOM, and the UTest Kit from AESWave, Chris devised and implemented a plan to divide and conquer this truck’s inability to communicate or start the engine.

Stick with Chris and Brandon on this wild adventure as they discuss how Chris used the tools at his disposal to create a diagnostic game plan. Listen and learn how Chris stuck to the plan as he systematically and efficiently eliminated what simply could not be wrong with the vehicle. Take note how Chris cleverly created a bypass test to prove not only what component created the root cause fault but that its replacement would surely fix the vehicle!
