Motor Age Technical Editor, Brandon Steckler is back again for another episode of The Trainer. Today Brandon covers a bit of an unconventional topic but one that offers true potential for expansion and growth. Both for the business owners and the technicians driving the business forward.
It’s no secret that the skillset of technicians in today’s shop must far exceed the skillset of those from previous years. The same knowledge is required but overlaying layers of complexity make covering every year, make, model, engine, and propulsion system out there, a daunting task. It’s not typically profitable to equip with every tool out there. Not unless the return on investment can be realized.
Frequently, well-equipped shops receive requests from surrounding, less-equipped shops to complete the jobs that they are unable to fulfill. It’s not always lacking mechanical tools that create this gap in service work completion. Many times, it’s a simple button-push from a capable scan tool function that the original shop suffers from. Tools that are only leveraged once or twice a month do not generate profit. But having these tools allows the more-equipped shop to capitalize and offers dealership-alternative solutions that can be very profitable. So, why not take it a step further?
Leveraging this revenue-building potential can allow well-equipped shops to take this show on the road and cover a wider radius, day in and day out. Many shops to date have taken this route and stretched their business plans in different directions. Placing one or more capable technicians on the road (full-time) allows for other means of generating revenue for the business and at the same time, creates a reputation for being reliable solutions-providers that offer convenience to the inconvenient and often expensive dealership alternative.
Stick with Brandon and learn what he has from his peers who have successfully ventured into this realm and have generated significant revenue for themselves, their technicians and their shops by providing solutions for surrounding repair facilities, body shops, and insurance companies alike.
