Tech Tip: 3 ways to keep your shop safe

Technicians should be encouraged to speak up if they see something unsafe

For the automotive industry, workplace hazards are everywhere, including the potential to be exposed to harmful substances – but by prioritizing safety, shops can keep employees out of harm’s way while minimizing risk and increasing efficiency.

In addition to following local and national safety protocol, implementing these tips can make automotive shops safer, and demonstrate a company’s commitment to doing the right thing by its workforce.

  • Foster a safety-first culture by facilitating ongoing conversations about its importance and encouraging employees to voice safety concerns. Empower employees to raise red flags about safety, vulnerabilities and risks.
  • Properly maintain automotive repair equipment to prevent accidents and injuries. Create and stick to an equipment maintenance schedule.
  • Choose the right products that are safe for people and the environment.  For example, WD-40 Specialist Gel Lube is 50-state VOC compliant, free from ingredients known to cause cancer, and safe to use on multiple surfaces. It also sprays on thick, so it won’t run, drip or make a mess, removing a potential slipping hazard.
