Freightliner Trucks announced that Gaston County, N.C. Emergency Medical Services (GEMS) has selected the Freightliner Trucks M2 106 as its model of choice for three new ambulance units. Manufactured at the Freightliner Trucks Mt. Holly, N.C. plant, the units will serve the entire Gaston County area.
The three new ambulances will join the existing GEMS fleet that includes other special response, rescue support and quick response units. Designed to be efficient and reliable, the new units are spec'd with many special features, including an in-cab roll-up door that allows for quicker access to paramedic turnout gear and houses a self-contained breathing apparatus; extra electrical capacity to run a variety of support equipment; and a 2013 Cummins ISB engine built specifically for fire and emergency vehicles.
Recently, GEMS personnel, county administration leaders and Gaston County elected officials got a first-hand look at the new vehicles in production when they attended a special event at the Freightliner Mt. Holly Truck Manufacturing Plant.
"Emergency vehicles must have lasting power. The units must provide safety, as they run constantly, 24 hours a day. Plus, stop-and-go driving is hard on all mechanical components," said Captain Jeff Hicks, GEMS. "The M2 106 really has everything we need to operate at the highest level."
Hicks also noted other beneficial features of the model such as an extended cab with room for two computers, three radios and a jump seat; low step-in height for crew comfort and safety; best-in-class visibility and excellent maneuverability when making tight turns.
