Motor Age Tech Tips - Hybrid/Electric HVAC Service: The Importance of Preventing Cross-Contamination

Oct. 16, 2024
Learn how to avoid cross-contamination when performing HVAC service on EVs.

Hybrid and battery electric vehicles (BEV) utilize the high-voltage energy from the battery to power their A/C compressors. The dielectric properties of refrigerant oil used in these systems are critical to maintaining electrical insulation and preventing unintended current flow between HV components. PAG oils, commonly used in conventional A/C systems, are conductive and unsuitable for use in EV systems because they compromise electrical isolation.

This is why it is important to ensure that you are not cross-contaminating by introducing conductive lubricants within EV HVAC systems. This Tech Tips video is sponsored by Robinair and is aimed at raising awareness around professional HVAC service on these systems. Scott Brown will run down many of the technical aspects of Hybrid and BEV A/C systems and cover some of the standards that drive safe system service and what you, as a professional service provider, need to be aware of.
