Motor Age Tech Tip: Identifying Ball Joint Wear with bproauto

March 31, 2025
Learn how to accurately diagnose ball joint wear in a steering and suspension inspection.

In this Tech Tips video, Erik Screeden, technical and multimedia director for Motor Age, explains the importance of steering and suspension inspection. A thorough examination of components like ball joints, tie rods, and control arms helps maintain proper vehicle alignment and safety while preventing premature tire wear. Understanding different ball joint wear diagnosis techniques is essential, as wear patterns vary based on the suspension design.

There are two main types of ball joints: load carrying ball joints, which handle both radial and axial loads, and follower joints, which primarily maintain alignment. Proper inspection methods differ depending on the vehicle’s suspension system. Vehicles with SLA suspension service procedures often require supporting the lower control arm to assess ball joint movement accurately. Solid axle designs, like those found in a Jeep Wrangler, have a different approach, with the lower ball joint bearing the axial load while the upper joint acts as a follower.

Accurately identifying worn components is crucial, as vehicle manufacturers provide specific guidelines for acceptable movement thresholds. Using the correct testing techniques can prevent misdiagnosis and unnecessary replacements. For a step-by-step guide on proper inspection methods, check out the full video.
