Why Mass Airflow Sensor Problems Aren’t Always the Sensor Itself

Sept. 16, 2025
2 min read

In this Tech Tip Short, Erik Screeden, technical and multimedia content director for Motor Age, dives into one of the most misunderstood components under the hood the mass airflow sensor (MAF). Often, a check engine light and MAF fault codes lead to quick assumptions that the sensor itself has failed. But as Screeden explains, proper mass airflow sensor diagnosis requires a closer look. From vacuum leak effects on MAF readings to contamination caused by dirty or heavily oiled filters, many issues can mimic a failed sensor.

The session also covers MAF sensor troubleshooting basics, such as checking the voltage supply, verifying scan data, and ensuring the sensor element is clean. You’ll also learn when MAF sensor cleaning and contamination checks are enough and when a true OE-spec MAF replacement is the right solution.

Don’t just clear the codes diagnose it right. Watch the full Tech Tip Short to get the complete insight and avoid costly misdiagnoses. For more information on MAF sensors, visit Walker Products
