Reluctor wheel movement

June 19, 2012
If a GM product equipped with a toothed crankshaft timing reluctor wheel experiences DTC P0016, P0017, P0018, P0019, P0008 and/or P0009, the reluctor wheel for the crankshaft position sensor may have moved. If the reluctor wheel has moved, GM recommends replacing the crankshaft.

This bulletin applies to the following GM vehicles:

2007 – 2011 Cadillac STS, Buick Lacrosse, and GMC Acadia, 2008 – 2011 Chevy Malibu and Chevy Equinox, 2008 – 2011 Buick Enclave, 2007 – 2009 Pontiac G6, 2008 – 2009 Pontiac G8 and Torrent, 2007 – 2010 Saturn Aura and Outlook, and 2008 – 2010 Saturn Vue, all equipped with 2.8L LP1, 3.6L LY7 and 3.6L LLT engines.

(Editor’s note: If the reluctor wheel has moved, this may be caused by a too-small-diameter rear crankshaft reluctor wheel journal surface that does not provide enough of an interference fit with the wheel. While aftermarket reluctor wheel removal/installation/indexing tools are available, if the journal diameter is insufficient, relocating the wheel will not succeed, necessitating crankshaft replacement.

Do not attempt to relocate and spot-weld the reluctor wheel. This can result in both an imbalance condition as well as a warped reluctor wheel).
