Q: How soon will fleets be required to install ELDs in their vehicles?
A: While the government has outlined different phases to allow fleets time to adopt this new technology, the official cutoff date when the ELD mandate goes into effect is Dec. 18, 2017. Fleets need to give themselves plenty of time to prepare, so the number of installations will steadily increase until the December 2017 cutoff date. With typical implementation taking roughly two or three months, depending on the complexity and scale of the project, fleets will also need to budget time for driver training and time to sort through any hiccups from defective devices.
