Ibeo begins distribution of latest LiDAR sensor with 4D environmental detection
Ibeo Automotive Systems GmbH, a leading German provider of LiDAR sensor solutions, has begun worldwide distribution of its next-generation LiDAR sensor, named the IbeoNEXT. Some of the first systems were delivered to the Chinese manufacturer Great Wall Motors, to be featured in their premium SUV brand ‘Wey’ models.
Great Wall Motors will be using IbeoNEXT as part of their semi-autonomous Level-3 driving system, to be rolled out in production vehicles in 2022. The IbeoNEXTs higher detection range, larger vertical angle, and higher resolution are allowing automakers to overcome the challenges of Level 3 automation by allowing a safer handover scenario between a vehicle driver and its autonomous driving system.
The new LiDAR sensor uses the latest solid-state photon laser measurement technology. The absence of moving parts allows greater sensor stability which are largely unaffected by road or vehicular vibrations and environmental influences. The compact, modular design allows greater flexibility and different setups for specific use cases.
IbeoNEXT processes multiple laser pules simultaneously to generate a high-resolution three dimensional model of its environment in real-time. Additionally, it generates a camera-like black and white image that is used to calculate object intensity. This fourth dimension recognizes the position and movement of vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians, crash barriers, and road markings with an unprecedented level of accuracy.
Perhaps the most unique feature of IbeoNEXT is the ability to allow image generation in four dimensions. The additionally generated image allows calculations and guidance based on object intensity. This is particularly advantageous in lane recognition and allows for more accurate readings in automotive safety systems such as lane departure warnings.
Fully developed in house, the light weight and compact sensor can be integrated in all driver assistance and automated driving applications up to level 4. The capability of the IbeoNEXT will be enhanced by new software from Ibeo to improve environmental perception, detection and categorization of objects.
The solid-state solution of the IbeoNEXT means there are no moving parts and gets rid of the need for mechanical-beam steering mechanisms and mechanical mirrors. This delivers much more stable images for processing and gives the IbeoNEXT a key advantage in LiDAR technology.
Automated driving relies heavily on sensors and the IbeoNEXT solid-state LiDAR sensors have long-range ability couple with high spatial resolution when scanning the environment, allowing for exact modeling. It also means changes in the environment and road conditions are detected faster with greater accuracy.
Dr. Ulrich Lages, the CEO of Ibeo Automotive Systems GmbH was especially proud of the work his team had done in bringing the state-of-the-art LiDAR system to the market, stating that “LiDAR is the perfect key technology to ensure maximum security in the automation of processes. Our new IbeoNEXT solid-state LiDAR meets these requirements with flying colors and can be used in a wide range of applications. We’ve already seen great demand in the market and are proud to now be delivering the first products. My special thanks go to Ibeo’s employees, who, with their passion and pioneering spirit, have created an innovative and very promising product.”
Ibeo has partnered with ZF Friedrichshafen AG and AMS to collaborate on joint LiDAR research and development to ensure the next generation of LiDAR can be adopted by automakers by 2021.
The IbeoNEXT is manufactured to strict automotive-grade standards. Ibeo has commissioned ZF to produce both the solid-state sensor and its control unit. ZF is a leading technology company for worldwide mobility solutions and holds a 40 percent stake in Ibeo. Production commenced in August 2020 in Plouzane, France with worldwide delivery already underway, having commenced in October of 2020.
