Investigation underway for over 780,000 Jeeps

The vehicles are being investigated over claims that certain Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator models can catch fire, even when the engine is off.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is looking into claims that certain Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator models can catch fire, even with the engine turned off. The investigation involves around 781,000 Wrangler and Gladiator SUVs and trucks from the 2021 through 2023 model years.

Nine complaints have been filed with the NHTSA of engine fires from owners, with one complaint involving an injury. The majority of complaints stated the fire started in the passenger side of the engine compartment. The NHTSA says fires that start with the ignition off "can result in an increased risk of occupant injury, injury to persons outside the vehicle, and property damage, with little or no warning."

Stellantis, Jeep's parent company, told investigators they were made aware of other "thermal incidents" that started at a power steering pump electrical connector. Stellantis is cooperating with the investigation and a recall is possible.

In light of the investigation, Michael Brooks, the executive director of the nonprofit Center for Auto Safety says owners of these vehicles should park them outdoors.

"If I owned one of these vehicles, I certainly wouldn't want to park it in a garage," Brooks said.
