AVTECC introduces EV safety certification for technicians

April 25, 2025
The electric vehicle certification is the first of a certification series that AVTECC will release throughout the year.

The International Advanced Vehicle Technology Education and Credentialing Coalition (AVTECC) announced its new EV Safe Certification program, which is designed to be a more in-depth and hands-on assessment than traditional multiple-choice assessments. The program is intended for technicians working across the light, medium, and heavy duty sectors on passenger vehicles, school buses, battery electric transit buses, and heavy duty commercial vehicles.

The certification is the first in a planned series from AVTECC for release later this year. The program was developed with input from a panel of EV subject matter experts, technicians, technical training managers, field service personnel, technical trainers, and educators from OEMs, higher education, and independent training entities.

Certification events have been held in Chicago, Orlando, and Kansas City, MO, and the next planned certification will be at the North American Council of Automotive Teachers Instructor Conference in Detroit from June 6-9, 2025. More events are planned throughout the year.

What people are saying

President and CEO of AVTECC David Macholz said, “AVTECC’s EV Safe Certification is a hands-on safety certification designed to ensure that technicians have the skills to work safely on electric vehicles."

"With safety-critical technologies that may pose a risk to technicians, a traditional multiple-choice assessment does not provide the level of assurance required to indicate they can work safely on these complex vehicles. Our EV Safe Certification requires technicians to demonstrate their skills on a live vehicle in real-world working conditions."

"We designed the AVTECC EV Safe Certification to be more than industry-recognized. We have strong interest from the automotive sector in not only recognizing the certification but utilizing it within their training organizations. We believe this assessment will become the industry standard here in the U.S. and abroad.”

“AVTECC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded to reimagine the way in which we prepare and certify technicians. With advancements in technology such as EVs and advanced driver assist systems, we need to be certain that technicians have the skills required to service, diagnose, and repair these vehicles. AVTECC will provide industry standards, program accreditation, and skills-based certification that provide technicians with a pathway to sustained career success.”
