Tool Review: Lumax Magnetic LED Light

The reviewer says this light is surprisingly bright for its size.

A light this small that’s designed to attach to a tool is unlike anything Randy Kaiser, technician at Rost Motors, Inc. in Manson, Iowa has used before. For this technician, he’s used his fair share of various sizes and styles of lights before. Kaiser says the Lumax Magnetic LED Light is a very handy size to take along on any job.

“The light is small enough that you can just grab it when you’re grabbing the tools that you need for whatever job you are doing,” Kaiser says. “That way you always have a light available, and it saves going back to the bench or toolbox to grab a light later on.”

The light is easy to use, with just one on/off button, Kaiser notes. There are two small button magnets on the bottom that hold the light in place on whatever tool is being used, such as a screwdriver, pliers, ratchet, or wrench.

“You just stick it on the tool that you’re using, push the button, and you’re ready to go,” he says.

When the light arrived, it came in a display package with a clear front and a thin cardboard backing. The instructions are printed on the back. Therefore, no manual was included. Once taken out of the package, a small plastic strip must be pulled out so that the batteries make contact. The light will then be ready for use.

The technician used the Magnetic LED Light mostly for working under dashes and in other tight and confined spaces where it was hard to get enough light to properly see.

“The light is surprisingly bright for its size,” he notes as an additional feature he likes. “It’s [also] very easy to take with you.”

The light uses replaceable batteries – a feature that Kaiser would like to see updated. For this technician, small button-type batteries are not commonly found within his shop, nor is a small screwdriver to fit the screws.

The batteries can offer up to seven hours of continuous use. Often times, as Kaiser notes, technicians forget to turn lights off and when they go to use them again, the batteries are dead.

To avoid this scenario, Kaiser suggests rechargeable batteries or a common size battery. However, he understands that these would probably increase the size of the tool and possibly the cost. Another idea that would be handy, Kaiser suggests, is wireless charging.

Overall, the unique qualities of the Lumax Magnetic LED Light, namely the ability to attach to tools, along with its brightness, were features this technician greatly enjoyed.
