Honeywell launches R-1234YF service can designed for automotive technicians

Honeywell announced that its Solstice yf refrigerant (R-1234yf) is now available in a service can designed for professional use.

The new package size, equipped with a self-sealing valve to keep any unused product inside the can after use, will be available at auto parts distributors and automotive aftermarket retailers nationwide in May. The new can enables technicians to readily and easily service the growing number of car brands that now contain R-1234yf refrigerant, according to the company.

The automotive industry is transitioning from the older A/C refrigerant, R-134a to R-1234yf, the next-generation, environmentally-preferable replacement. More than 20 million vehicles around the world currently use R-1234yf and that number is expected to surpass 40 million by the end of this year. Additionally, a number of models sold with R-1234yf as early as model year 2014 are reaching the end of their manufacturer’s warranties and may need to have their air conditioning systems serviced.

“Honeywell is providing easier and more economical access to R-1234yf, which should help more auto service professionals get in the R-1234yf service game,”  said Rick Winick, business director, Automotive Refrigerants, Honeywell Fluorine Products. “The new small service cans will make it easier for automotive technicians to buy, stock and use the product to service car A/C systems.”

Solstice yf is an award-winning refrigerant based on Honeywell’s hydrofluoro-olefin (HFO) technology. It has a global-warming-potential (GWP) of less than 1, which is 99.9 percent lower than the current, widely-used auto refrigerant, R-134a, which has a GWP of 1300, the company says. Nearly every carmaker will use R-1234yf in at least one of their U.S. models to take advantage of the environmental benefits of the new refrigerant. Honeywell estimates that 50 percent of the Model Year 2017 cars sold in the U.S. market will have been converted from R134a to R1234yf. In addition, European carmakers have also selected R-1234yf as their next-generation A/C refrigerant of choice.
